Karnal, February 1
Member of the Valmiki community and relatives of Sajjan (22) today blocked the road at Committee Chowk for an hour.
Sajjan, a resident of Ranwar village, was stabbed to death near Nagla village by five persons on Monday night.
The protesters demanded arrest of the accused, four arms licences for members of the community, Rs 50 lakh as compensation and government job for family of the deceased.
The protesters said that they would not cremate the body till their demands were accepted and refused to take the body from the mortuary.
Indri DSP Kushalpal Rana and Naib Tehsildar Rajbaksh Arora tried to pacify the protesters, but they only lifted the blockade and went to their villages without taking the body. They had threatened to hold statewide protest against police inaction in the case.
“Instead of arresting the accused, we were asked to take the body for cremation, but we will not cremate it till our demands are accepted,” said Charan Singh, one of the protesters. He said Rs 50 lakh and a government job should be given to a family member of the deceased.
