Jagdish Nayar, BJP candidate from Hodal, surprised residents of the district’s Aurangabad village by placing a shoe on his head to seek their blessing on Thursday.

Speculations are rife that Nayar’s action was aimed at pleasing a community that was angry with him following a controversial remark targeting the community.

“I placed a shoe on my head just to assure people that I will serve them like a servant if I get elected. I will be in their service during my tenure as legislator,” he said.

He denied reports of offending any community. “My action was meant to please all communities (36 biradaris) and not just any specific community as speculated by some on social media.”

Congress candidate from Hodal Uday Bhan dismissed Nayar’s action as theatrics aimed at attracting attention. “Nayar is faced a stiff opposition because of many reasons. He had to resort to theatrics to grab publicity,” he added.
