Panipat, September 12
In a unique style of protest, former Mayor and BJP leader Bhupender Singh declared the Panipat Municipal Corporation (MC) dead and organised a funeral procession for it on Wednesday, along with city residents. He accused the MC of having a lethargic attitude towards works in Ward No. 11.
Meanwhile, the MC started patching the potholes and repairing the streetlights after the protest.
He said officials of the MC were ghosts. He, along with his supporters, gathered at Angel Mall and decorated a ‘corpse’ of MC with flowers and black balloons. The funeral procession started from the Angel Mall and went through various markets, Sanoli road, Kaladar Peer Dargah, Insaar chowk and NH-44, and finally reached the Commissioner’s office at railway road. The procession was led by a band and residents put shawls on the ‘corpse’ of the MC.
Bhupender alleged, “I have been protesting for a road from many months but in vain.
Besides, all sewerages and drains are chocked, roads are waterlogged, streetlights are not working since the past many months and lifting of garbage is poor due to which garbage heaps can be seen everywhere. Also, development of parks has stopped in the ward,” he rued.
The protesters tried to enter the MC office but were stopped. After that, a delegation led by Bhupender met Pradeep Dagar, MC Commissioner, who assured them of starting the development works soon. — TNS
