Activists of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) today dumped potatoes on Ladwa road in Shahabad Markanda.

Led by president of the BKU Karam Singh Mathana and farmer rights activist Gurnam Singh Charuni, the union members held a protest at the grain market in Shahabad. The police had to use mild force to stop the farmers from crossing barricades.

Leaders accused the state authorities of delaying the purchase of sunflower by government agencies.

The protesters demanded that remunerative minimum support price (MSP) of potatoes, maize and other vegetable crops should be fixed. BKU leader Charuni said a group of farmers dumped potatoes on the road to lodge their protest.

He said the BJP had failed to implement recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee on farm reforms.

Charuni threatened to intensify the stir if their demands were not met.
