Karnal, June 6

In a twist to the suspected honour killing of 19-year-old Jyoti of Ballah village, her father Rajesh Kumar blamed Jyoti’s husband Monu for forcing her to take the extreme step.

He, along with hundreds of villagers, met Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria late on Tuesday evening and demanded action against Monu. “My daughter committed suicide and we had no role in her death. She got married to Monu on March 14. After taking her BCom-II examinations, she came to the village on May 24. She told me that Monu used to harass her for dowry,” the father alleged. She was forced by Monu to commit suicide, he alleged. Three days ago, Monu, a resident of Makdoli Kalan village in Rohtak district, had filed a police complaint that his wife had been killed by her parents and cousins. The police registered a case against Rajesh Kumar, father of the girl, mother and two cousins Satish and Vicky under Sections 302, 34 of the IPC. No arrest has been made so far.

Monu denied Rajesh’s allegations and said that his father-in-law was misguiding the police. “My wife Jyoti had told me that she was beaten up by family members a day before her death,” said Monu.
