Ice slabs are being used to preserve bodies at the local civil hospital as the lone freezer in the mortuary has been lying defunct for two months now.
Sources said about 70 bodies had been brought to the hospital for a postmortem examination during the past two months and many of them were kept in the mortuary for longer periods by using ice slabs.
“Kin of the deceased are asked to bring ice slabs,” said an employee of the hospital, adding that the hospital authority was not serious about getting the freezer rectified.
When unclaimed bodies are kept in the mortuary for identification for 72 hours, policemen are asked to provide ice slabs, said a hospital official.
Dr Abhimanyu, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at the civil hospital, said the freezer had been lying unused due to a technical snag in its voltage stabilizer.
