The traffic police issued a challan every 1.5 minute in the district in October and realised a penalty of Rs 53.96 lakh from offenders by issuing 26,274 challans during this period.

Disclosing this, a spokesperson of the Traffic Police Department, said though an average of 25,000 challans were being issued each month, the number of challans exceeded 26,000 last month. While maximum number of challans in this period pertained to two-wheeler drivers, the department had also launched a random drive at night to check the violations. The police also began sending overspeeding challans through speed post to the address of the vehicle owners, who did not stop at the police check point. “Over 700 challans were sent to the vehicle owners for violating speed norms during September and October ,’’ said Hemant Kumar, SHO, Traffic, here. A total of 1,221 driving licences have been suspended since June 1, he added.

Claiming the need to step up police vigil on the roads, SK Sharma, the district coordinator of the RSO, said there were several points in the city that were vulnerable to traffic chaos and violations by errant drivers. He said the police needed to resort to CCTV technology to keep a check on the violations, as a large number of people became a victim of accidents caused by overspeeding each year.
