Jewellers foil robbery bid

Two armed persons made a vain attempt to loot a jewellery showroom in the main market, near SD College, in the city in broad daylight today. They had to flee following stiff resistance from the owners of the showroom.

The miscreants assaulted the showroom owner and his son when they tried to nab them. They also fired at the son of the showroom owner but he escaped unhurt. The miscreants managed to escape, leaving their pistols, the helmet and a motorcycle behind.

According to the police, jeweller Ramesh Oberoi, along with his son Rakesh Oberoi, was seating in the showroom when around 3 pm two youths carrying guns arrived there. One of the miscreants was wearing a helmet while the other had covered his face with a cloth. They pointed guns at the jewellers and demanded jewellery and cash from them, said the police.

When Rakesh Oberoi resisted their attempt to loot the shop, one of the miscreants fired at him but he escaped. Ramesh Oberoi also resisted the miscreants, who attacked the father-son duo on their heads with pistols. However, their guns fell down during the scuffle. Meanwhile, their worker Naveen, who was also in the showroom, came out.

The miscreants abandoned their pistols and the helmet in the showroom and tried to escape on their motorcycle but it skidded and they fell down. They left the motorcycle behind and escaped on foot.

DSP Aatma Ram Lamba along with Inspector Suresh Kumar reached there and inspected the showroom.

The injured father and son were taken to the general hospital from where Ramesh Oberoi was referred to Bhakt Phool Singh Medical College for Women at Khanpur.

According to sources, the incident was recorded in a CCTV camera installed in the showroom. The police have recovered the CCTV footage, two pistols, the helmet and the motorcycle.

“A case has been registered against two persons. Teams have been formed to nab the accused,” said the DSP.
