Karnal’s fish breeder gets Padma Shri

Fish breeder Sultan Singh, a resident of Butana village in the district, has been selected for Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of the country.
Aditya Dabas, Deputy Director, Agriculture, confirmed his nomination and said that his name had been chosen for his contribution to fish farming.
Born on March 6, 1963, Singh, who has adopted several technologies at his farm like re-circulatory aquaculture technology, said, “I have no words to express my happiness.”
He said, “The water table is going down and it has become a new challenge for fish farming. I urge the farmers to adopt new technology so that they can earn more profit.”
He started breeding catfish and reared shrimp in adverse climatic conditions. “I have reared shrimp in the temperature ranging from 8°C to 20°C (November 2004 to January 2005) against its optimal temperature ranging from 21°C to 33°C in the open without using any water heater,” he said.
Padma Bhushan for social crusader
Social crusader Darshan Lal Jain (92) of Jagadhri city of Yamunanagar district has been conferred the Padma Bhushan by Government of India. Born on December 12, 1927 in a Jain family of Jagadhri, he chose to dedicate his life to the nation. He became the founder-member of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Jagadhri, established in 1954 and founder secretary of DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar.
