Kurukshetra University, in compliance with the guidelines of the Bar Council of India (BCI), has decided to discontinue the evening course of the Department of Law from the 2017-18 academic session.

Prof Dalip Kumar, Chairperson, Department of Law, told The Tribune here today, the KU, however, planned to increase seats in the morning course from 120 to 180.

He said the decision to discontinue the evening course was initiated after the BCI asked various institutes in the country to wind it up. An official announcement in this regard would be made soon, he added.

The BCI’s Legal Education Rules require law education institutes to conduct classes between 8 am and 7 pm for at least five hours a day and it was not feasible for the KU to follow the regulation, said sources. The Department of Law is nearly three-decade old and is considered popular among working professionals from diverse fields.

The KU had 60 seats in the three-year evening course of law but no new admissions will be made from the coming academic session. However, students of the second and final years would continue with their studies, he said.

The sources said in the last few years, the evening course saw a dip in the number of working professionals and the KU had to allow regular students to take admission. Sources said in December last, the BCI had declared that evening classes run by various institutes violated the rule.
