Ved Singh Malik (69), a former minister and national general secretary of JJP, was consigned to flames at his native village Pipli Khera in the district on Thursday. He had passed away at hospital in Gurugram after a brief illness.

Besides the residents of the village, prominent persons from other villages, leaders of various political parties, including JJP’s convener Dushyant Chautala, Congress MLAs Kuldeep Sharma and Jagbir Singh Malik, former Haryana Assembly Speaker Satbir Kadian, social activist Devender Kadian, BJP’s Azad Singh Nehra and Sumit Rana and many others paid homage.

Before his election as Lok Dal MLA from Gannaur in 1987 and serving as Transport Minister, Malik remained village sarpanch three times from 1971 to 1987. Before joining Congress in 2007, he unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections in 1991, 1996 and 2000. However, he joined the INLD in 2014 but during the division of the party last year, he joined the JJP and was nominated as its general secretary.

He is survived by his mother Shanti Devi (91), wife Savitri, two sons, two daughters and their children. — OC
