Marora village in Mewat district, which hit the headlines for being renamed after US President Donald Trump by Sulabh International, an NGO, was in for a rude shock as the administration pulled down the new name plates and the US President’s billboard.
“No NGO or social organisation has the right to rename a village. This name is identity of the village in records be it revenue, maps or other government data and renaming can only be done by the government. They are free to call it anything in their promotional material, but have no authority to erect new name sign,” said Mewat Deputy Commissioner Mani Ram Sharma.
The exercise carried out by the administration late last evening left both the villagers and social activists cribbing who had aimed to achieve development funds for the village through this.
“The panchayat, including two villages of Nizampur and Chava, was renamed on June 23. We had hoped of infrastructure development, but this has disheartened us,” said a panchayat member.
“We are not against development and support all NGOs and social organizations, but changing a panchayat’s name is neither in their power nor mine. We had asked them to submit permissions for the name change and reported adoption by the US authorities, but got no reply,” said the DC.
