Karnal, June 28
Demanding toll exemption for local commuters, scores of Gharaunda residents and traders and sarpanches and panches of villages in the block observed a half-day bandh on Thursday.
Most establishments in Gharaunda remained closed till 2 pm.
The bandh call was given by the Toll Sangharsh Samiti Gharaunda. Residents took out a procession and raised slogans against the toll plaza authorities.
They threatened to continue the protest till toll exemption was granted to local commuters. They demanded cancellation of the FIR against local residents over an altercation with toll plaza employees.
Samiti members met local MLA and Hafed chairman Harvinder Kalyan to seek a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during ‘khula darbar’ in Karnal on Friday.
Kalyan assured them on sorting out the issue at the earliest. He told them that he had apprised Khattar about the problem being faced by residents.
He said he had sent a letter to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking either toll exemption for local commuters or shifting of the toll plaza outside Gharaunda.
