Faculty members, students and officials of Pandit Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts got a dose of spirituality as they attended a session on Transcendental Meditation organised on the university campus here today.
Meditation guru Swami Shailendra Saraswati, who was invited to help the students improve their IQ, performance, concentration and general well-being through meditation, explained the need and benefits of meditation in everyday life.
“The knowledge of the self is the real knowledge and this can be realised through the regular practice of meditation. Its beauty is that one doesn’t have to make drastic changes in lifestyle to learn it. One needs just 20-25 minutes in the morning and evening. With it, one can feel the change within a few days. This practice has life-changing power,” said the spiritual trainer.
Dispelling myths about meditation, he asserted that concentration is not the tool for meditation, it is the end goal.
“If one concentrates too hard during meditation, he gets tired and stressed which is counter-productive. If done with proper technique, meditation improves the functioning of the brain and also fosters creativity. It reflects positively on one’s personality as well as performance,” he said.
The SUPVA Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rajbir Singh, stressed on the importance of meditation for students. He said in order to improve creativity, one has to open his/her mind to new ideas and possibilities. “This can only happen when the mind is peaceful and free from negative tendencies. The practice of meditation connects the internal self to the outside world in a smooth manner. I am sure that students will benefit immensely from this spiritual exercise,” he said.
