Panipat youth held for ‘attacking’ traffic cop

The police have arrested a youth of Nara village in Panipat district on the charge of assaulting a traffic policeman on duty on Wednesday evening. The court remanded the accused in judicial custody on Thursday.

In his complaint to the Chandnibagh police, Constable Jagmal, posted in the traffic wing of the district police, reported assault by the youth.

He said he was controlling traffic at the Gohana turn on the National Highway-1 on Wednesday evening. He said he saw a tractor-trolley being driven on the wrong side from Sanjay Chowk side, on which he directed the driver to turn back.

He reported that the youth, who was on foot, came towards him, started arguing and attacked him. He said he tried to defend himself, but the youth thrashed him and tore his uniform.

He stated that a Home Guard jawan, who was on duty nearby, and some commuters caught hold of the youth and called the police.

He added that a police team reached the spot and admitted an injured Jagmal to the General Hospital. A case was registered against the youth, said Suresh Kumar, Chandnibagh SHO.

Identified as Praveen of Nara village, the accused had been working in a mobile phone shop, said the SHO. The accused was produced in court, which remanded him in judicial custody, he added.
