Residents force robbers to flee without ATM

KARNAL: Three robbers uprooted an ATM on the Phoosgarh road and abandoned it on a ‘rehri’ after being confronted by residents in the wee hours on Wednesday.

Three robbers uprooted an ATM on the Phoosgarh road and abandoned it on a ‘rehri’ after being confronted by residents in the wee hours on Wednesday. The cash was saved due to timely action by local residents.

Sadar SHO Baljeet Singh said the ICICI Bank ATM had Rs 2.93 lakh. He said the robbers initially tried to open the cash box, but failed. He said they uprooted it and loaded it on a ‘rehri’. He said alert residents sounded the alarm, which forced them to flee.

Local resident Sangram Singh said three robbers came on a motorcycle around 3.30 am. He said they attacked the chowkidar in the area, who approached him. He said he and other residents challenged them, forcing them to flee without the ATM.

The SHO said there was no security guard or CCTV cameras in the room where the ATM had been installed. He appealed to bank companies to ensure guards and cameras at all ATM kiosks.
