A man from the district’s Sundana village allegedly hacked his wife and children to death with a farm implement before ending his life by hanging himself from a tree on Wednesday night. The deceased were identified as Bijender, alias Nanha (42), his wife Sarita (38), son Deepanshu (9) and daughter Jahnavi (12).
Jahnavi’s body was found in a cattle compound behind her house, while the bodies of Sarita and Deepanshu were lying in the fields located nearby.
Superintendent of Police Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said a suicide note recovered from the spot indicated that Bijender was under debt. “Financial constraint is the likely reason behind the murders,” he said.
Police Department’s forensic expert Saroj Dahiya said that as per the suicide note, Bijender had taken loans from several persons, amounting to about Rs25 lakh.
“He has written several irrelevant facts and pieces of information in the suicide note. This indicates that he was under depression,” she said.
Members of Bijender’s family and villagers said he was a political worker considered close to former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s camp.
In a complaint lodged with the police, Bijender’s brother Devender said when he woke up in the morning, he found Bijender, his wife and children missing. “When I searched for them, I found their bodies,” he said, adding his brother was mentally disturbed for quite some time and did not talk to anyone.
The police registered a case and sent the bodies for the postmortem examination.
