Students of State University of Performing and Visual Arts (SUPVA) here have been protesting to press for the provision of the necessary professional equipment and infrastructure at the university and fulfilment of other demands for several days.

The university authorities had recently rusticated 14 students and registered an FIR against them, which infuriated the students. The university officials recently held talks with the protesting students, but the standoff continues.

The students started staging “nukkad nataks” in the town to make the people aware of their concerns and the alleged high-handedness of the university authorities.

The members of the civil society extended their support to the agitating students.

“Rustication is usually the last resort and the step of rusticating 14 students appears to have been taken in haste. The university administration went to court against the students. The university authorities should seek the opinion of the faculty members while starting new courses and address the concerns of the students so that their longstanding issues are resolved,” said Ramnik Mohan, an educationist and social activist.

Some other prominent residents said the stalemate should be ended at the earliest in the larger interest of the university as well as students.

SUPVA registrar Bharti Sharma said a committee had been formed to resolve the issue and talks were being held with the representatives to find an amicable solution.
