Karnal, July 23

Around 50 pilgrims going from Gorakhpur to Vaishno Devi had to spend Monday night and Tuesday on the road as the tourist bus they were travelling in was challaned by RTA officials. The authorities claimed that the tourist bus had a fake tax certificate which was not displayed online.

“We checked documents and found that tax had not been paid. We imposed a fine of Rs 50,500. The driver produced a fake tax-paid document, which was not available online,” said ADC Anish Kumar Yadav.

He said they kept the bus documents and issued a copy of the challan and travelling certificate so that they could travel.

The pilgrims alleged that the documents were complete and they were forced to stay on the road for no fault of theirs.

“We hired the bus for a visit to various pilgrimage destinations, but our dream was shattered,” said a pilgrim.
