Karnal, July 3
The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has unearthed a racket of issuing fake Motor Vehicle Tax receipts to commercial vehicles in the state on the pretext of online tax submission.
The RTA got two FIRs registered one each in Karnal and Ambala against two persons for issuing fake receipts of the Motor Vehicle Tax to commercial vehicle owners.
The fraud came to light a few days back when Karnal RTA Secretary Pradhuman Singh was checking commercial vehicles near Bastara toll plaza in the district.
On suspecting the authenticity of a slip of the Motor Vehicle Tax issued to a bus operator, he got it checked with the help of the bar code inscribed on the slip and found it to be faked.
“When I inquired from the bus driver, he said that he got the receipt from a computer operator in Rewari who said that his tax had been deposited online,” said the Secretary.
“We got an FIR registered at the Madhuban police station against the computer operator for issuing the fake receipt,” he added.
“Since, I have the additional charge of Ambala district, I got another FIR registered there against the computer operator,” he said.
He urged the commercial vehicle owners to be more vigilant and check the authenticity of their tax receipt with the help of bar codes inscribed on the slip. He asked them to pay their taxes only at the authorised tax collection centres.
“During a checking drive from April 1 till date, we found 35 vehicles plying without paying the tax and imposed a fine of nearly Rs 13.50 lakh on them,” he said.
