Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar formally inaugurated the office of the SDM and Tehsildar of newly created Badkhal subdivision here today.
The office is located on the premises of Government Girls School in NIT here. It is perhaps the second office, after the office of Commissioner of Police, to run from a school complex.
“The office will serve around 6 lakh residents of the Badkhal subdivision as they will no longer be required to visit the Mini-Secretariat in Sector 12 for routine administrative work,” said Reagan Kumar, Badkhal SDM.
He stated that around Rs 60 lakh had been spent on renovation and infrastructure and a wall raised to separate the school and SDM office in order to reduce the possibility of disturbance to students.
He said the gate of the office had been built on the opposite side of the school gate and neither inconvenience nor safety issues would be caused by the office.
The local administration had been on a hunt for the space required for setting up the administrative office for the past several months.
The notification for the Badkhal subdivision was made on October 20 last year and the place was finalised in February this year.
It would provide various administrative services to the residents of around a dozen sectors, 27 villages and some residential areas in the NIT region.
It had been reported that earlier there was a proposal to set up the office at Nahar Singh International Cricket Stadium, but was dropped due to opposition from the sports lobby.
Describing the office as encroachment on the school complex, social activist KL Gera said it would create nuisance. He said it was amazing that the authorities could not find a suitable place in the city.
The Government School in Sector 21 here was already being used by the office of the Commissioner of Police, which was against the interests of the education sector, he said.
