THE world can greatly benefit from the wisdom of the elderly in empowering succeeding generations in an evolutionary manner. We need to bridge the gap between the old generation and new generation as a human development activity. There is a need to identify the potential of senior citizens and acknowledge the contribution made by them. Senior citizens are a storehouse of knowledge, wisdom and experience. They deserve space in the programmes and policies for healthy ageing as HRD activity.

Kisan mandi in miserable state

THE much-talked-about kisan mandi in Sector 20, Panchkula, is in a miserable state. There is open loot by the vendors. It was started with much fanfare with the aim of connecting farmer with consumers. There used to be price list of vegetables which was displayed prominently at the entrance. It was mandatory for all vendors to display the price list of vegetables. Scales were supplied by the authorities after proper calibration. These days, a computer printout is put up at a dark place which is very difficult to read. Not even a single vendor displays the rate list. Most vendors buy vegetables from Sector 26, Chandigarh, and sell here. Hardly any farmer comes now to directly sell to customers due to the existing cartel. No official is available in the office to look into complaints. Will the authorities wake up and streamline the system for the benefit of consumers?.

Stray animals cause fatal accidents

NOT only stray cows but donkeys, horses and buffaloes are also left on the roads by their owners. They are a sure recipe for fatal accidents. Bikers are equally at fault for driving without helmet. These animals also create great hindrance in maintaining cleanliness. Though Karnal is comparatively clean, animals make the roads dirty. The city cannot boast of being a clean city unless animals are off the roads. Civic authorities are expected to take remedial measures.

Unnecessary development being undertaken

THE photo of this drain, half km in length, built two years ago and passing along New Karnal Road, Kaithal, is filled with garbage. It shows how unnecessary developmental works were undertaken in the past with impunity. In the coming years, new tenders may be floated to widen the same drain that has never seen rain water passing through it. This is one method to misuse money meant for developmental works.

Dy CM should fulfil promise on old-age pension

JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, who has joined the Haryana Government as Deputy CM, now has the opportunity to honour the poll promise regarding enhancing social security allowance, popularly known as old-age pension, to Rs 5,100 per month. Senior citizens are waiting impatiently for its implementation.

Is a civic issue bothering you? Are you agitated over the lack of concern? Is there something heartening that you feel needs to be highlighted? Or a picture which in your opinion ought to be seen by many, and not just you?
