Karnal: A workshop on stem cell technology was organised at National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) here in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry. Veterinarians from state participated in the workshop. Dr D Malakar, principal scientist in the animal biotechnology centre at the NDRI, talked about stem cell origin, their properties and usefulness. Stem cells can treat several livestock diseases such as wound, fracture and mastitis.
Students put their GK to test
Karnal: Canara Bank, Karnal circle office, organised a quiz titled “Canara Knowledge Champ” in Kalpana Chawla Medical College here on Sunday. More than 500 students from around 160 schools across the state participated. Purshottam Chand, Deputy General Manager and circle head, said the bank was conducting quiz competitions across the country. The winners at the circle level will compete at the all-India level competition in Bengaluru tentatively scheduled in November. Jannat Dutta and Siddarath Sirohi from Army Public School, Ambala Cantt, bagged the first prize. Gitanshu Arora and Sachit Sachdeva of St Theresa Convent Senior Secondary School, Karnal, came second, while Aditi Dash and Kartik Gupta from Raman Munjal Vidya Mandir, Gurugram, stood third.
Students get NEET tips
Yamunanagar: A workshop about career prospects in dentistry was organised at DAV Dental College here last week. College principal IK Pandit said students were given tips on how to prepare for NEET, and BDS and MDS entrance exams. Toppers from All-Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi; Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh; and Government Dental College, Patna, interacted with students.
Self-help group awareness
Sonepat: Bhagat Phool Singh Women University’s department of social work in collaboration with Punjab National Bank (PNB) and NABARD organised an awareness camp on the formation of self-help groups and bank linkage under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan in the district’s Khanpur Kalan village. During the camp, rural women were made aware of government’s welfare schemes and benefits of joining self-help groups. More than 60 women from Khanpur Kalan, Gamri, Kakana, Kasanda and Kasandi villages, adopted by the university, participated in the camp.
Road safety in top gear
Rewari: The Youth Red Cross Unit of Indira Gandhi University (IGU), Meerpur, has launched a signature campaign to make people aware of road safety rules. Inaugurating the campaign, Prof SK Gakhar, Vice-Chancellor, said, “Several people lose their lives in road mishaps every year. These lives could have been saved if road safety norms had been followed.” A slogan writing competition was organised on the occasion. Shagun bagged the first prize. Sandhya and Promila shared the second position, whereas Deepika secured the third position.
Lake gets a makeover
Ambala: The Ambala division of the Northern Railway has converted a dirty water body near the office of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) into a freshwater lake. The water body was receiving untreated water, including sewage and garbage, from DRM’s office. A pathway has been constructed using silts all around the lake. More than 2,500 plants have been planted around the lake and in the adjoining garden.
