Store owner shot dead

Jhajjar: The owner of Vishal Mega Mart, a general store, was on Friday shot dead by three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants. The deceased was identified as Ashok Dhankar of Kasni village. An old enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the murder. Ashok was seated at the cash counter when two assailants came and fired several rounds from a close range. The third accomplice waited for them outside on the motorcycle. Ashok died on the spot. TNS

445-kg ‘chura post’ recovered

Kurukshetra: The police have recovered 445-kg ‘chura post’ from a vehicle here on Thursday. The suspect has been identified as Anil from UP. On a tip-off that a vehicle carrying a huge quantity of ‘chura post’ was on its way from Gujarat to Baddi, the vehicle was stopped near Umri village on the national highway. During inspection, 18 bags of chura post weighing around 445 kg were recovered from the driver Anil. A case under the NDPS Act was registered. TNS

Man gets life term for murder 

Sonepat: Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajiv Gupta on Friday sentenced notorious criminal Satish, alias Mona, of the district's Kilorad village to life imprisonment in a murder case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. If he fails to pay up, he would have to serve one more year in jail, the court ruled. Before his arrest, he was declared a proclaimed offender and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. OC

UHBVN employee convicted of graft  

Kurukshetra: Additional District and Sessions Judge Rakesh Singh on Friday awarded five-year jail term to Suresh Kumar, an employee of the UHBVN, in a graft case. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on Suresh, posted as a substation attendant (lower division clerk) in Kurukshetra. He had sought Rs 3,000 to correct an electricity bill. TNS
