The career of students studying in the Echelon Institute of Technology (EIT), a private engineering college here, is at stake after the JC Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, withdrew affiliation midway.

Opened in 2007, the institute has over 500 students enrolled in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of various streams.

“We were shocked to hear the news yesterday after reaching the campus,” said Rohit Kumar, a student of BTech (computer science) first year. Students staged a protest on the campus, asking as to why the affiliation was withdrawn midway when they were preparing for their semester exams due shortly.

Shivam Rawat, another student, said the institute authorities said it’s not their fault and the decision, which had come arbitrarily, would be challenged in the court.

The institute has 480 seats for BTech and 48 for MTech courses. The university, in its letter issued on October 17, said: “The EIT has failed to get conducted the mandatory inspection. With the submission of unsatisfactory reply to the show-cause notices issued on May 24 and May 31, regarding the continuation of provisional affiliation for the academic year 2019-20, the university has decided to withdraw the affiliation for the current academic session. No information about the registration or continuation of the students for various academic years, including 2019-20, has been submitted by the college.”

It added that the final opportunity of inspection visit on August 5 was also not availed. No one from the EIT was available for comment despite repeated attempts.

Accusing the EIT of failing to abide by the rules and regulations, YMCA University VC Dinesh Kumar said: “Students’ interests will not be harmed as they will be given an opportunity to appear in exams and complete their course.”
