Kundu (22) was set to visit his home on his birthday on February 10.

“He was the youngest among the siblings. After our father’s death, he was a fatherly figure to me and my sister. He had last visited us on Diwali. We were eagerly waiting to celebrate his birthday and had planned a surprise. But he left us shocked. I last spoke to him hours before his death,” said one his sisters Kajal.

The youngest of three siblings, Captain Kundu leaves behind his mother Sunita and two sisters — Soniya and Kajal.

His father, Lala Ram, who was a manager in a tile company in Nagpur (Madhya Pradesh), had died of a heart attack six years ago. Subsequently, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2013 to support the family.

“We have lost our star, but left us all proud. He lived by his FB status ‘Life should be big instead of long’,” Soniya said.
