A widow farmer in Makdani village of Charkhi Dadri district belonging to the Scheduled Caste has said her widow pension was stopped recently by the bank after she failed to repay the loan she had taken on the kisan credit card.

Bhanmati stated that she had taken a loan for Rs 1.38 lakh on the kisan credit card. She solemnised the marriage of her daughter and then was unable to get adequate produce in the fields due to lack of irrigation facilities.

As she could not repay the loan in time, the bank stopped her widow pension of Rs 1,600 per month. “I visited the Sarv Haryana Gramin Bank to check my pension last month, but officials there told me that it had been stopped after default in loan repayment,” she said.

A farmer activist in the village, Sukhwant Singh, pointed out that her husband had died years ago and young son committed suicide some months ago due to the mounting financial trouble.
