Panipat, November 16

Mohinder Chawla, a former aide and key witness in the rape case against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai, was on Saturday reportedly assaulted by Surender Sharma, a former sarpanch of Sanauli, his native village in Panipat district, in the presence of security personnel.

Security personnel intervened, saved Chawla and informed the Sanauli police station staff. The police reached the spot and admitted him to the general hospital.

Chawla claimed that the police had registered a case against Surender, father-in-law of sarpanch Priyanka Sharma, on the direction of the High Court. He said the former sarpanch was holding a grudge against him since.

He alleged that the former sarpanch pressurised him to strike a compromise in cases against Asaram and his son, but he refused. SHO Ravi Kumar said the injured was admitted to hospital and they were recording his statement, after which action would be initiated.
