The slow pace of Chamba district’s development is attributed to inadequate communication and accessibility in the region. This was stated by District Senior Citizens’ Welfare Society president PC Oberoi in Chamba..

“We can’t solely blame the government for this, as the public was equally responsible for not taking up development issues strongly with the authorities concerned,” he said.

Long ago, the central government had surveyed the area to lay a narrow-gauge railway line by extending it from the Pathankot railhead to Surangani in the Churah area, where a 198-MW hydroelectric project was functioning, said Oberoi.

“Had the proposal had materialised, several picturesque areas of the district would have been developed as tourist spots,” he said.

He urged the government to improve communications in the district besides identifying and developing tourism destination sites. — OC
