Three students of the Government Polytechnic College, Kangra, were today booked for ragging after the college anti-ragging committee recommended action against them.
The decision to recommend legal action against the trio was taken during an emergency meeting of the committee despite the college being closed for the day on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
The accused have been identified as Bobby, a third-semester student of the electrical department, Hitesh, a first-semester student of the mechanical department, and Sahil Sharma, a first-semester computer science student.
Kangra Sub Divisional Police Officer Sunil Rana said: “We booked the three students after the college anti-ragging committee recommended action against them. But, they are yet to be arrested as the case is under investigation.”
College Principal Anil Sood said: “Shivansh Singh Rajput, a first-semester student of the polytechnic, had filed a written complaint against the three students, alleging that he was ragged on September 30 midnight in his hostel room. He even alleged that he was harassed and forced to strip naked.”
Sood said: “Rajput had said that two senior faculty members visited the hostel at 10.30 pm on September 30 and it was only after they left that the incident took place.”
The Principal said that Rajput had demanded action against the accused students and even threatened to move court. “The anti-ragging committee of the college held detailed discussion over the issue and recommended legal action against the three students,” Sood said.
He said the victim was admitted to the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Tanda, by his parents after the incident and later taken home so that could not be present during the meeting today.
RPGMC had reported the first ragging incident more than a decade ago, which left a 19-year-old medical student, Aman Kachroo, dead. Since then, under the Supreme Court directions, ragging incidents are dealt with strictly.
