BTech student commits suicide

Anmol Thakur (20), a BTech student of JP University of Information Technology, Waknaghat, committed suicide by hanging himself in his paying guest accommodation around 10:45 am today.
The student, who had failed to clear his semester examinations right from the time he took admission in 2015, had not informed his parents about his poor performance. He had been de-registered from the university in 2017 as his Cumulative Grade Points Average score was less than the requisite 3.5 and he had not cleared the semesters in the given attempts. He was a civil engineering student.
His father Rakesh Thakur and mother Anita Thakur were coming to meet him from his native place Samirpur in Hamirpur district. They were constantly in touch with him on the cellphone till Ganahatti near Shimla after which the deceased did not talk to them.
He was under immense pressure owing to his poor academic performance and hung himself with a rope before they could reach Waknaghat, said police officials.
His cousin Aman Thakur, who accompanied the parents, cut the wire mesh of the window as the room was bolted from inside and, despite persistent knocking, it failed to be opened. They disentangled the rope from the boy’s body and took it to the Kandaghat Civil Hospital from the dispensary of the JP university. Doctors at Kandaghat pronounced him brought dead.
Rakesh Thakur is the general secretary of the BJP district unit and the student’s mother is the sitting pradhan of Samirpur panchayat which is the home panchayat of former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. No foul play was suspected by the parents and the boy resided alone in his accommodation. The body was sent for the post-mortem examination to the Regional Hospital at Solan. The police have started investigation into the incident.
Students started an agitation on the university campus and also raised slogans against the university administration. They said the authorities were not addressing their pending grievances and imposing huge monetary penalties even on every insignificant issues.
ADM, Solan, Vivek Chandel, the SDM, Kandaghat, and DSP, Solan, also rushed to the spot after receiving the information of the agitation.
His father Rakesh Thakur rued that the university authorities had not informed the parents about their son’s de-registration from the university which was lamentable.
