The garlanding of the picture of Nathuram Godse after firing three shots at the cut-out poster of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi at a function of the Hindu Mahasabha in Uttar Pradesh on January 30, sparked a silent peaceful protest by the state Congress along with other members of the society, expressing their outrage against the act here on Monday.
Pradesh Congress Committee president Kuldeep Singh Rathore and Himachal party affairs in-charge Rajani Patil along with party workers converged near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on The Ridge carrying banners.
They wore black ribbons on their head and their mouths and lodged their protest against the “anti-social act”.
According to protesters, this act on January 30 was televised on several channels.
“This act has hurt the conscience of the people of the country and is unpardonable and exposed the real face of those who are talking about celebrating 150 birth anniversary of Father of Nation”, said Harsh Mahajan, a senior state Congress leader. This act has exposed the mindset of the pro-BJP elements and people should now know their real face, he said over the phone.
Rajani Patil alleged that the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) had disgraced the Father of Nation by hitting his statue. “We are protesting against such anti- social elements here by peaceful means”.
The PCC president said the people were paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary and these anti-social elements were enacting the incident. “We are following Mahatma Gandhi’s path and are protesting against those anti-social and anti-national elements”, he added.
