The Opposition Congress on Tuesday staged a walkout on the opening day of the Budget session on the issue of proposed amendments in Section 118 of the Tenancy and Land Reform Act, 1972.
Led by CLP leader Mukesh Agnihotri, Congress MLAs raised slogans against the government's intention to amend the Act. He said the Act was made by the first chief minister, Dr Y S Parmar, to protect scarce land of poor hill farmers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the government had no intention of amending the Act and interest of people of state was uppermost.
He said public opinion and suggestions from the Opposition had been invited and accordingly a view would be taken on the issue.
He, however, said "the government has the mandate and would not succumb to pressure".
