Research scholars from Central University Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) on Wednesday walked out of the conference on “Tribal Community of India: Identity and Cultural Heritage” objecting to the criticism of JNU by a right wing research scholar.

Ashish Bhave, secretary, North East Centre, Delhi, and a right wing scholar, while addressing the conference, said there was a need to relook at the tribal studies carried out in Northeast India. That most data on which the research on tribal communities of Northeast was being carried out was collected by British officials and Christian preachers posted in the Northeastern states during the colonial era.

Bhave said the research carried out by JNU scholars of the Northeast was based on the secondary data collected by the British officials. There was no word as tribe in Indian civilisation. The entire research was based on the victimisation and Hinduisation theory of the Northeast.— TNS
