Ajay Jaswal of Kathoh village in Bangana subdivision left a job in Britannia and returned to his hometown to take up goat-rearing as an occupation. He has set up a goat farm on 12 kanal of the inherited land and currently has 40 does and eight bucks.
“After my father died, I decided to come back home and in March I contacted the Animal Husbandry Department for technical and financial assistance. Now, my income has started picking up gradually. Males will be sold to abattoirs,” he said.
Yusuf Deen, another farmer from a BPL family in the Kolka panchayat who was given 10 does and a buck by the state government under a government-sponsored scheme in October 2018, said he had already recovered his share of investment of Rs24,000 on the project. “Today, after almost a year of setting up a farm, I have 20 does,” he said.
Arjun Singh from Matoh village, who was given 10 does in September 2018, today owns about double the number. “I am happy that the state government has announced to create a goat rearers’ cooperative society, besides setting up infrastructure for branding and packaging goat dairy products. These steps should be implemented at the earliest, so that the farmers are benefited,” he said.
The state government has been promoting goat-rearing by providing technical assistance, besides providing units of three, five or 10 does and one buck to farmers belonging to the BPL families.
