Hamirpur, October 26
The District Library will soon be shifted to a new complex adjacent to the old library.
Currently, the library, which was set up in 1972 after the formation of the district, is being run from one room that can accommodate only 25 to 30 readers at one time. Even basic infrastructure at the library is in bad shape. Readers, including elder people, are being forced to sit on broken chairs.
Sources said the five-storey new complex had been constructed at a cost of Rs 3 crore. It would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur during his visit to the state-level Hamir Utsva here on October 31.
The new building will have parking on the ground floor and administrative offices on the first floor. The other three floors will have study halls with a sufficient space to keep more than 2 lakh books.
The present library has more than 35000 books of various categories, including fiction, novels, general knowledge, science and history. It has 980 registered members and more than 150 frequent visitors.
Dr HS Jamwal, Principal of the Government Degree College and in charge of the library, said the new complex would have the best facilities for the readers. The sitting capacity had also been increased.
