Dr Radhakrishanan Medical College and Hospital here is facing an acute shortage of X-ray films, forcing patients to avail the facility from private labs at higher costs.
Sources said the medical college had been left with only 10 films in its stock and that too were made available to the victims of accidents only. The authorities had not made any purchase in the last few months.
As many as 1,500 patients visit the hospital every day. The hospital needs at least 250 X-ray films on a daily basis. It has also come to the fore that tenders for the same are yet to be floated by the hospital authorities, aggravating the problem further.
The sources said during the audit, irregularities in the use of funds collected as user charges were observed by the department. Following this, the government imposed restrictions on the utilisation of funds by the hospital.
The audit department had raised questions over an amount of Rs 23 lakh that was collected as user charges nearly two years ago but was not deposited in the account of the hospital.
Medical Superintendent Anil Verma said they had sought permission from the government for the purchase of X-ray films and other consumable items.
