The Industry Department is going to conduct a survey in Lahaul-Spiti to find ways to revamp the ailing handloom and handicraft sector in the district.
Residents of the district have been into the handloom and handicraft business for years, but after the advent of machine-made products, the market demand for these products has declined drastically. This is forcing the weavers to adopt alternate occupation to sustain their economy.
Sanjiv Kumar, a local resident, said weaving was an integral part of the cultural tradition of Spiti villages and other parts of district, especially during winters.
Chander Bhushan, GM, District Industrial Centre, said the department was working to promote handloom and handicraft sector to generate jobs .
