Dr Jatinder Kumar Mokta, a professor in the department of medicines, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Physicians Oscar E Edward’s Memorial Award’ for 2018-19.
The award was given to him by the American College of Physicians for rendering voluntary health services in rural areas at a ceremony held at New Orleans, Louisiana, the USA. He is the first Indian to receive this award.
Dr Mokta said the American College of Physicians recognised his contribution in voluntary social service for organising health camps on diabetes in the state.
Dr Mokta was instrumental in reaching out to patients in the far-flung cold desert of Spiti, where he injected insulin to tribal patients.
The award comprises a certificate, a plaque and a honorarium of $250.
