Kangra, November 2
MCM DAV College, Kangra, emerged winner in the Himachal Pradesh University Basketball Championship (men), which concluded in Kangra today.
MCM DAV College scored 69 points and defeated Government College Una 14.
In the semifinals, MCM DAV College had defeated Government College, Dharamsala, and Government College, Una, beat Government College, Sarkaghat.
As many as 20 colleges from across the state participated in the three-day championship. Four colleges, including MCM DAV College, Kangra; Government College, Dharamsala; Government College, Sarkaghat; and Government College, Una, had entered the semifinals on Friday.
The chief guest on the closing ceremony was Prof Surinder Kumar Sharma, director, physical education and youth programme, HPU. Munish Sharma, president, HP Basketball Association, was the guest of honour.
Prof Sharma exhorted the participants to lead a disciplined life. “Holistic development is possible when a student is physically fit and emotionally balanced. All of this can be achieved through sports. It is through sports that students learn values like discipline, respect, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability. Good sportsmen are a social and national asset,” he said.
Welcoming Prof Sharma, Dr Baljit Singh Patial, principal, said under his guidance, sports activities were flourishing in the state.
