Air India started its operations at Kangra airport with higher-category aircraft ATR 72-600 series in place of ATR 42 aircraft since yesterday, Airport Authorities said here today.

KK Sharma, Director Kangra Airport, said: “Air India started the new flight with a sitting capacity of 68 passengers.” He said earlier Air India was using ATR 42 aircraft with a passenger capacity of 48.

The induction of new aircraft would lead to decrease in airfare and stimulate tourism in the region.

Sharma said three scheduled flights One of Air India — flight AI 9813/14 — and two of Spicejet — flight SEJ 2191/92 — are operating at Kangra Airport.

The new aircraft was given a ceremonial welcome at Kangra Airport by AAI and Air India staff.

The operation with the bigger aircraft would also reduce flying time approximately by 15 minutes, KK Sharma said.

Sharma said: “The Kangra airport has a 1,372 metre runway meant for ATR 42 aircraft and the proposed length of the runway after extension is 1,800 metres, which will help the landing of ATR 72 – 600 series without load penalty.” He said at present the ATR 72 aircraft landed with load penalty.
