Mandi, August 1
The number of girls admitted to B.Tech courses in IIT-Mandi has gone up this year from 4 per cent last year to 15 per cent this year.
Out of the total 150 seats, this year there are 22 girls enrolled in the new batch of BTech courses in the institute, while last year there were only six girls.
The average percentage of enrolment of women students in IITs is 8 per cent across India, while this year IIT-Mandi succeeded in attracting more students.
Timothy A Gonsalves, Director, IIT Mandi, said, “This year the institute made efforts to publicise its achievements and facilities being provided to students. This is the reason we succeeded in drawing the attention of parents to enrol their daughters in IIT-Mandi for better education as well as protective environment.”
He said in IIT-Mandi, tuition fee was exempted for women students. “The institute has attracted 150 students this year through JEE (Advanced) admission procedure. Out of them, 40 students are admitted to computer science, 40 to electrical engineering, 40 to mechanical engineering and 30 to the civil engineering branch,” he said.
“The institute had for the first time introduced a five-week induction programme last year that benefitted students. Inspired by the experience of IIT-Mandi, IIT-Gandhinagar, IIT-BHU and IIT-Patna, the IIT Council has recommended that all IITs should run an induction programme of at least three weeks duration,” he added. “The Ministry of Human Resource Development has requested all engineering colleges to follow suit,” he said.
