Shimla, July 21
Members of Joint Action Committee (JAC) today demanded that the police should provide protection to Mamta, wife of Suraj, a Nepali worker who was one of the six accused arrested in the case. He died in the police custody in a scuffle on Wednesday, a day before he was to be produced in the court.
“We demand that the police and the district administration should provide protection and financial help to Suraj’s wife as she faces threat to her life in view of fresh developments in connection with the case,” said Balak Ram Chauhan, convener, JAC.
The members of the JAC today made this plea before a team of district officials led by Rohan Chand Thakur, Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, and Somya Sadashivam, SP, Shimla, who visited Kotkhai town.
According to sources, Mamta lives in a hut with her two children near the Dandi forest from where the victim’s body was recovered on July 6.
Mamta had claimed to have known two persons, who had come with Raju, a co-accused in the case, twice to their hut before Suraj was arrested by the police, revealed the sources. Dr Ramesh Chand, Medical Superintendent, IGMC, said the body of Suraj was under police protection and was yet to be handed over to the relatives.
