PTA meeting at Tara Hall

A meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was held at Loreto Convent Tara Hall on Thursday. More than 1,800 parents of students from nursery to Class XII attended the first meeting. Elections were held to appoint the office-bearers of the association, both from the parents’ side and teachers’. School principal Sister Nirmala was chosen as the chairperson of the PTA. Other office-bearers included Dr Sushil Sood as the president, Rajni Giriraj as the vice-president, Tara Bage as the secretary, Ratan Singh Verma as the chief adviser   and Susane Kashyap as the cashier. Parents, who have been elected as members include Priya Taneja, Atul Tangri, Pravesh Jhingta, Damanpreet Kukreja, Surender Bharota, Nitin Karol, Shikha Thakur, Ajit Topno, Phalma Chauhan, Philom Tirki, Sheetal Pakhratia and Mahender Singh Thakur. The teachers in the PTA include Priyanka Sebastian, Veena Chauhan and Dinesh Thakur.

Shoolini researchers awarded

A team of Shoolini University researchers, comprising Amanpreet Kaur Virk and Aaliya Ali, along with the faculty mentor, Dr Saurabh Kulshrestha, received an award of Rs 10 lakh at a ceremony in New Delhi on Wednesday. The team had participated in the Department of Science and Technology — Lockheed Martin — Tata Trusts, India Innovation Growth Programme 2.0, University Challenge-2019 and emerged the winner. It had given a presentation on the use of Moringa seeds to purify water through the use of small and inexpensive kits similar to tea bags. The award was given by Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Prof Ashutosh Sharma, in the presence of delegates of Lockheed Martin, Tata Trusts, FICCI, IUSSTF. The award money is to be used for the improvement of Moringa-based water purification kit, according to Dr Kulshrestha.

Historian passes away  

Professor SR Mehrotra (88), the founder chairperson of the history department at Himachal Pradesh University,  passed away in Shimla on Thursday. An internationally acclaimed historian of Modern Indian History and author of many books including, The Emergence of Indian National Congress, India and the Commonwealth, Commonwealth and the Nations and many other books like The Mahatma and the Doctor, he taught history in India, abroad and at Himachal Pradesh University for decades. A condolence meeting was held in the department.
