Cloth merchants of the district have resented the implementation of Goods & Services Tax (GST). Addressing mediapersons here today, Kullu Cloth Association president Mandeep Singh said the new tax regime would force the cloth traders to close down their businesses.

He said around 30 per cent of their stock had now become dead stock and now they would have to pay tax on this dead stock. He said defected cloth items were not returned and it would be hard time for the traders to bear the losses after the implementation of GST.

Kullu district Beopar Mandal president Rakesh Kohli said there were various anomalies in the GST. He said the threshold limit of Rs 10 lakh and composite sale limit of Rs 50 lakh was set for the traders of Himachal while it was higher in neighbouring Punjab and other states.

Rakesh said most of the traders were not computer literate and they would have to face tough time in filing GST returns online. The cloth merchants unanimously decided to not to apply for GST registration until the government finds a solution to their grievances. — OC
