“I have great regard for people who crack the UPSC examinations in fourth and fifth attempts as once you give your 100 per cent, it is difficult to start again and needs a lot of substance and patience,” he said.

Ayush, who passed out from St Edward’s School, Shimla, and DPS RK Puram, did his chemical engineering from BITS Pilani. Son of an IFS officer, who retired as Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and nephew of ADGP (Law and Order), Ayush had all the motivation and inspiration at home.

“Once I was accompanying my father on a tour and came across villagers who told me about how their lives transformed because of an initiative taken by my father to provide firewood when he was posted as a District Forests Officer. This incident, 15 years ago, ignited the feeling of welfare of villagers in my mind and I decided to appear for UPSC examination,” he said.

Hamirpur lad ranks 174th

Sundeep Kaushal, who hails from remote Sareri village in the Nadaun subdivision of the district, brought laurels not only to his village but also the district by securing 174th position in the UPSC examination in his first attempt.

Kaushal, who is currently pursuing his BTech degree at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, said his first priority would be to serve the nation in foreign services.

He had secured 99 per cent marks in Class X and 98 per cent in Class XII. — OC
