A two-day workshop on “Indian Mathematics” organised by the Department of Mathematics, Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP), started here today in which students and faculty members of various departments actively participated.
CUHP spokesman Sanjay Kumar Singh said the purpose of the workshop was to propagate the contribution of Indian mathematicians towards development in the fields of pure and applied mathematics, particularly in algebra, trigonometry, calculus and astronomy.
Prof K Ramasubramanian of IIT, Bombay, highlighted the contribution of the Vedic and ancient mathematicians and elaborated with detailed examples from the “shulba sutras” as well as from ancient verses.
Prof C Montelle of School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, gave a comprehensive list of mathematical works of ancient Indian scientists, which remained in use even today.
Students of MSc mathematics also participated in mathematical rangoli, pi-digit contest and mathematical model/poster presentation.
