Hindi writer Mahip Singh dead

Hindi writer and activist Mahip Singh passed away in Gurgaon this morning. He was 85. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Besides short stories, he was better known for his activism. He along with former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, veteran journalist and editor Kuldip Nayar and Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora formed Punjab Group. The group raised voice against violation of human rights in Punjab during 1980s and 90s, especially after Operation Bluestar.
Narender Mohan, who was associated with Mahip Singh for 50 years, said: “We started our career together as Hindi teachers at Delhi’s Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, he was a very sensitive man and never shied away from raising his voice against injustice and was active in Delhi’s literary circles till last month,” said Mohan.
“His introduction to Marathi Dalit literature in Hindi through his magazine Sanchetna was major contribution to Hindi literary world,” said Prof Chaman Lal, former professor of modern Indian languages Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal in his condolence message said he was widely travelled and respected writer and had equal command over Punjabi and Hindi. His writings always mirrored the aspirations of the common people.
