In a first, MC felicitates women councillors

In the history of the Municipal Corporation (MC), Amritsar, it was for the first time that women councillors were honoured here today. The International Women’s Day was also special for the civic body as 50 per cent of the councillors are women. Secondly, the 2009-batch IAS officer Sonali Giri, who took this initiative, is also city’s first woman MC Commissioner. “This is the time to celebrate the woman empowerment as we have 50 per cent women in the MC House,” she said.
After honouring all 42 woman councillors with shawls, the MC Commissioner was seen clicking selfies with them. The councillors appreciated Sonali Giri’s initiative.
Except a few woman councillors, most of the representatives joined the function in the absence of their husbands. While interacting with councillors, Giri urged them to raise their voice for the issues of residents in the MC House. The civic body commissioner also interacted with “shy” councillors, asking them to speak confidently in the House.
Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu congratulated women on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the MC honoured six councillors for making efforts to make people in large numbers download Swachhta mobile application. The councillors, including Reena Chopra of ward 69, Vikas Soni of ward 70, Harpandeep Singh of ward 4, Navdeep Singh of ward 20 and Priyanka Sharma of ward 13 were awarded for motivating the public. Office-bearers of the Rotary Club also distributed 500 safety kits to safai karamcharis on the occasion.
