“If Kate Middleton were to see my creation, she would definitely leave everything for it, she might even marry me. Jokes apart…,” he adds the last two words to balance his statement.
We meet Anuj Sharma at INIFD, Sector 8, a renowned fashion designer known for his Button Masala collection. Following a free flowing chat, Anuj shows his willingness to dress the royal couple in his signature style, which is, “comfortable”. That’s it. And we though this self-proclaimed ‘lazy’ designer from Jodhpur would add more adjectives to his creation!
“My creation is designed keeping in mind my comfort. I don’t want to depend on too many people while designing it, which Button Masala helps me to do,” he adds.
For those of you who don’t know what Button Masala creation is all about, here we give you a low-down.
nOne, Anuj doesn’t use any needles of thread. He just uses rubber bands and buttons.
nHe works with a lot of buttons by using a simple grid system, where the buttons were stitched on a fabric at a distance of two inches. The separate fabric straps had buttonholes at the same distance as the buttons. The straps were then used to convert the fabric into a garment.
No matter how interesting it sounds, but would a normal girl want to wear his collection? “They should ideally be, but they go in for those bling and other stuff. Just joking, since I feel totally comfortably designing it, my clothes carry the same feeling, so I don’t think anyone should have a problem wearing them.”
And what if the buttons and rubber bands came off! “Don’t get intimidated by the buttons. You can remove the buttons and it will be a plain cloth again,” Anuj says.
“I have never taken myself or my creations seriously. I have taught kids as small as 5 to 90 to make Button Masala creation.”
